SO MUCH MUSIC, so little time!

20 Apr

In the coming weeks, there is a massive wave of awesome music coming through New Orleans. From the Railroad Revival Tour to Jazz Fest and all of the random shows in between, this city is going to be treated to some wonderful sounds. Here’s my Top 5, DO NOT MISS list:

1. Jessica Lea Mayfield
The Parish, House of Blues. Thursday, April 21.
Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys produced Mayfield’s debut album. Enough said.

2. Mumford and Sons
Railroad Revival Tour, Woldenberg Park. Wednesday, April 27.

Besides the fact that Mumford and Sons produced an indisputable anthem in Little Lion Man and gave an incredible performance at Republic in November, Mumford and Sons make this list because of the originality of the venue: on the Mississippi River and in view of the vintage Railroad Revival Train, upon which they will be eating, sleeping, and recording along a 6-stop tour of the southwest. Joining Mumford and Sons will be Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show

3. ?uestlove DJ set
Republic New Orleans. Sunday, May 1.
I saw ?uestlove’s DJ set during Mardi Gras at Maison on Frenchmen. As the video below explains, you must read ?uestlove’s tweet to understand how amazing this set was. Hopefully he can live up to some very high expectations this Jazz Fest at Republic.

4Arcade Fire
Jazz Fest. Friday, May 6. Acura Stage, 5:35PM
With a reputation for incredible stage performances, this is a show not to miss. Also, Arcade Fire in New Orleans?  Probably a once in a lifetime opportunity, thanks Jazz Fest!  See also: the hilarity of tween outrage after Arcade Fire took home the Grammy for Album of the Year.

5. The Strokes
Jazz Fest. Sunday, May 7. Gentilly Stage, 5:20PM
On the heels of their new album, Angles, The Strokes are coming to New Orleans at the front-end of a summer full of festival shows. I have been a fan since I was 15 years old and this will be my first time seeing them live.  Combine this with my major crush on Julian Casablancas, the show promises to be monumental.

Tees for a Cause

31 Mar

This week I discovered two amazing companies that both sell cute tshirts and help out a worthy cause at the same time.

TSHIRTS + CHARITY [TO THE TUNE OF INDIE ROCK]
The Yellow Bird Project is a Montreal-based nonprofit that works with indie rock musicians to design graphic tshirts.  They sell the tees, benefiting a charity of the band’s choice.  I was sucked in by the amazing range of bands that have taken part and the genuinely awesome designs.  I am particularly partial to the shirt below, designed by Metric and benefitting MusiCounts.  Follow Yellow Bird Project on Twitter!

Metric-3

BOOKS ON SHIRTS. SHIRTS ON A MISSION.
Out of Print not only aims to spread the joy of reading to the world with their book cover-printed tees, but also donates a book to Books for Africa for every shirt they sell. There are so many cool, retro tees to choose from like the Great Gatsby tee pictured below.
Follow Out of Print on Twitter!

Moral of the story? Go buy cool tees and help out a great cause!
